Visioncare Opticians

Your eyes do a lot for you!  when was the last time you had them checked??

At Visioncare Opticians a comprehensive eye test is a thorough evaluation carried out by our Optometrist which includes an in-depth testing of not only vision but also eye health, and how your eyes work together.

It aims to detect eye conditions early, sometimes even before symptoms appear whereas a basic eye test primarily is a basic vision screening.

At the beginning of a comprehensive eye exam, a detailed history will be taken; our Optometrist will obtain as much information regarding your previous ocular history as well as an opportunity for you to highlight any areas that may be of concern or need addressing for example ‘glare with night driving’ or the ‘eyes feel dry.’  The Optometrist will then tailor the eye test according to your requirements and visual needs.

How to prepare for your appointment?

  • Bring your previous prescriptions or spectacles with you.
  • List of any medications
  • Note any symptoms or any visual areas you would like to address
  • Note if there is any family history of any eye conditions

Having this is especially helpful if you are seeing our Optometrist for the first time, but even if you have been to us before, we will need to update your record of any changes since your previous visit.

Additionally, at Visioncare Opticians, you have the added benefit of the Optometrists being also the practice owners thus providing excellent continuity of care because:

  • They’ll have a complete picture of your eye health history and any changes over time
  • They can spot subtle trends in your vision that might be missed if you saw different people each visit
  • You’ll feel more comfortable and can build trust with someone who knows your needs
  • They’ll remember your preferences for frames, lens types, and any specific concerns you’ve mentioned before

How well you can see?

To begin with the eyes will initially be checked independently, then together to assess how well they work as team!

An accurate prescription check and vision correction will prevent eye strain, headaches and fatigue for your daily comfort as well as provide solutions for specialised requirements such as driving, sports and occupational correction.

In our screen-heavy world, precision and proper correction will relieve digital eye strain and ‘tired eyes’

The ‘eye’ health

Examining the the eye health includes first assessing the front of the eye i.e. the eyelids and corneal layers of which there are 5!

We then review the middle portion, which is the lens, and the ‘jelly like’ within the eye. Finally progressing to the posterior surface of the eye which is the retina and it’s surrounding.  Did you know the retina is made of 10 distinct layers?!

Are the eyes really the window to the soul?

The comprehensive eye examination includes a more in-depth test including the OCT.

The OCT (Optical coherence topographer) looks deeper within these retinal layers.  Think about a piece of cake; Before cutting through, you are only able to view the icing.  However, you don’t know if it contains, jam, chocolate or vanilla flavouring/filling until you slice through it.   With this unique form of imaging, you can see the both; the surface of the retina but also a 3-D view of the layers beneath the surface.

It aims to detect eye conditions, such as:

  • Glaucoma: The “silent thief of sight” – in the early stages shows no symptoms and the patient is very much unaware.
  • Cataracts: requires regular monitoring and when caught early allows for better treatment planning
  • Macular degeneration: Critical for preserving central vision, especially in the ageing population

Globally, at least 2.2 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment. In at least 1 billion – or almost half – of these cases, vision impairment could have been prevented.

Beyond what you see

The CVD(cardio-vascular test) within the comprehensive test takes an even deeper view to look for any systemic conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol deposits

The retina is the only place where you can view the blood vessels without, the skin covering it!

A detailed report will then be emailed, useful for you to have in your records as well as a reference point for the GP.

In conclusion a comprehensive eye test reveals a lot yet completely non-invasive.

It will not only give you the right glasses prescription that is suited to your visual needs, but it is also a window into your overall health.

You can have perfect 20/20 vision on a basic test whilst an eye condition is silently developing. The comprehensive exam catches these hidden problems early, when they’re most treatable — just like how a mechanic might spot a worn brake pad before it fails completely!

Following your eye test, if you need spectacles our Optometrist and dispensing Optician together will go through the various frames and lenses that will work for you best whilst considering; your lifestyle, what you will be using the glasses for and of course fashion!
